Creating Creatures

I'm thinking about having a go at some new graphics for the creatures in Chaos Bass over at http://www.zunked.org/

How did you guys go about designing the graphics for Cyber Battles?

MSPaint, But the graphics in Chaos Bass are very simple arn't they?
