Range Attacks

Out of curiosity, just how powerful are range attacks?  I'm sure they differ from creature to creature...but if an Acid Spitter has an attack of 5, is it's range attack 5 as well?  Or is range half of the creature's strength?  Or what?  Obviously, range has been toned up some since the original, which isn't really a complaint, but I'd like to know how much it has been increased for strategic purposes.
